 We’ve moved this whisky around more than we usually would, but we think the result is worth it.

 The aim, as with all our whisky, is to add additional layers of flavour during the ageing process, always without overpowering the underlying distinctive Kinglake spirit.

During the first 18 months, the large format Buffalo Trace barrel ensured that we added just a light touch of that traditional ex-bourbon vanilla toffee sweetness.

Our mash bill already contains 25% peated malt so we were more interested in the medicinal and saline characteristics of the ex-Laphroaig cask rather than simply wanting to add more smokiness. The barrel also adds just a little extra ‘Islay’ sweetness.

A barrel sold on from an existing Scottish Distillery likely has little to add in terms of oak and so we needed just a little more wood to complete this release. A smaller format second-fill Apera fitted the bill perfectly and has added just little ruby-red colour, spice and French oak dryness.

Kept at cask strength, this, still fairly spirit-forward whisky, pays homage to the ‘King of the Islays’ whilst not being afraid to square up to it with Kinglake’s own distinctive spirit.

As always, bags of lingering, oily mouthfeel!

PS: This is extra special because it’s our oldest distillery bottling to date and the first release over 5-years old Woo Hoo!
